The Construction of One Chamberlain Square

It's great to see a large portion of the building installed with the final vertical window dividers, there is a much better sense of the architectural style apparent now.

The Birmingham Westside Skyline

Birmingham UK, I love it when this happens, a huge slab of dark Cloud hangs over the westside as the nearly setting sun blasts through the gap on the horizon.

The Construction of One Chamberlain Square

A clear sunny day day for this update of the construction of One Chamberlain Square, lots of great photos of the progress but in particular the installation of the lighter vertical window dividers on a large area of the building, showing much better how it will compliment surrounding architecture.

Five Ways Park, an hidden Birmingham Gem

Five Ways in Edgbaston is one of the busiest roundabouts in the city but inside and largely hidden from view is a great sunken park...

The Construction of 103 Colmore Row

103 Colmore Row has been a big hole for a while now but that is set to change. Daniel has only been able to get snaps through the gate but was delighted to be briefly escorted into the site and got some great photos. He was told some very interesting stuff by the lovely gentleman at the site who is one of the senior engineers on the project.

Usually this is the best shot Daniel has been able to get.

Once inside, the true size of the 4 floor deep hole becomes apparent!

One part of the original Natwest Tower is being used.

Here the original waffle style floor construction of the Natwest Tower can be seen.

The original foundations of the Natwest Tower are being used for this construction, test holes have been drilled to check it's integrity and the central core has bee marked out ready for the start of this massive 26 story tower, it will be over 100m and is being built on the highest site in the city!

New Growth in the City

Here's a photo juxtaposing budding twigs and branches with the oddly positioned construction cranes in the distance at the Paradise Birmingham development, Birmingham is a city in growth and cranes are often iconic of regeneration.

I've started a photography feature on crane and heavy plant photography and would welcome contributions from other enthusiast photographers.

The Trees Are Budding in 'Boomingham'

I like to look for interesting juxtapositions that work visually but have a little extra. Here I saw the nest and then the core for Bank Tower Two and immediately recognised it as an opportunity to capture something that spoke of 'new growth', which is what Birmingham is experiencing recently. Canon 60D, 70-300mm zoom lens at 130mm, F4.5, 1/500th second exposure, ISO 100.

Using Different Lenses in Photography

Here are three photos taken with three different lenses of the construction of Bank Tower Two on Broad Street as part of the Left Bank development. Click 'View Article' to see the photos, descriptions and tips.

These were taken just before sunset, using a Canon 60D hand held with ISO 400 film speed.

18-55mm zoom lens at 18mm, 1/125th second exposure, F/8

This is the widest end of the lens and does produce a little distortion.

28-80mm zoom lens at 80mm, 1/200th second exposure, F/8

I always like to fire off several captures because I find that a tiny camera shake can defocus the image and I can never tell properly till I see it on my laptop.

70-300mm zoom lens at 228mm, 1/1000th second exposure, F/5.6.

I definitely needed to fire off a few to make sure that I got this sharp (it's pin sharp on the 18mpx master too). The lens produces a sever magenta flare in the shadows adjacent to super reflective edges, most consumer lens have this effect due to the minute tint in the lens glass and can often be red to even green. I removed most of it in Photoshop Elements by reducing the saturation on only the magenta channel and if did not really effect the rest of the photo. It can still be seen but is much better.
